PZP (Povinné zmluvné poistenie)

PZP (Povinné zmluvné poistenie) is compulsory motor third-party liability insurance. Its purpose is to protect other road users by covering damage that a driver may cause to the property or health of third parties.

In Slovakia, every vehicle owner is legally required to arrange third-party liability insurance known as PZP (Povinné zmluvné poistenie). This is a mandatory policy that covers damage caused to third parties in road traffic accidents for which the driver is at fault. PZP compensates both material damage (damage to vehicles and property) and non-material damage (bodily injury, medical treatment costs, and compensation paid to relatives of injured or deceased persons).

It is important to emphasize that PZP does not cover any damage suffered by the at-fault driver or damage to their own vehicle.

Average cost of PZP for passenger cars typically ranges from EUR 80 to EUR 400 per year. In addition, insurance companies regularly adjust premiums or expand coverage with new optional add-ons. For these reasons, it is recommended to regularly compare PZP offers.

Slovak legislation sets following minimum liability limits under PZP:

  • EUR 5.24 million — for bodily injury or death
  • EUR 1.05 million — for property damage
  • Many insurance companies offer higher liability limits, especially for commercial vehicles, corporate fleets, or drivers seeking extended protection. If total amount of damage exceeds selected limit, the difference must be paid by a person responsible for the accident. Therefore, choosing adequate insurance coverage is critically important.

How to Choose the Best PZP?

Best policies are considered to be those that offer optional add-ons with the possibility to select specific types of coverage. This represents an excellent compromise between basic PZP and comprehensive insurance (havarijné poistenie).

Popular optional coverages:

  • – windscreen insurance
  • – personal accident insurance for the driver and passengers
  • – collision with wild animals
  • – luggage insurance
  • – protection against natural disasters

If you frequently travel abroad, it is advisable to consider extended roadside assistance services. Although basic assistance is usually included, scope of services is often limited.

For full protection of your own vehicle (typically up to 7 years old), voluntary comprehensive insurance (havarijné poistenie) is used. This policy covers:

  • – damage to the owner’s vehicle caused by a traffic accident
  • – fire, natural disasters, falling objects
  • – theft or attempted theft
  • – vandalism or collision with animals

Additional options may include:

  • – roadside assistance services
  • – vehicle towing
  • – provision of a replacement vehicle
  • – insurance of glass and headlights

Cost of both types of insurance (PZP and comprehensive insurance) is calculated individually and depends on:

  • – driver’s age and driving experience
  • – engine power and vehicle class
  • – region of vehicle registration
  • – selected liability limits and additional coverage

When comparing prices, the driver’s claims-free history is also taken into account. Drivers who have caused accidents within the last 1–3 years pay higher premiums (malus). Conversely, if you have had no accidents in recent years, many insurers offer bonus discounts.

Intended use of the vehicle is also important: private car, taxi services, driving schools, emergency services, etc. Insurance for taxis or special-purpose vehicles is significantly more expensive.

It is important to understand that Slovak insurance system combines mandatory legal protection (PZP) with voluntary financial protection of the vehicle (comprehensive insurance), ensuring stability and financial security for all road users.

Common Client Mistakes

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I have paid for PZP. Am I already insured?

Yes. From the moment payment is made (e.g. by bank transfer), insurance coverage is valid. Insurance company will send you the Green Card by email (it must be printed), followed by the original documents by post or mail. The Green Card must always be kept in your vehicle.

How is the price calculated?

The main factors are engine power and volume, address of registration, owner’s age, and claims-free driving history. Vehicle’s age, registration region, and purpose of use are also taken into account.

How can I check whether PZP is valid?

The easiest way is to check by the vehicle registration number (license plate) via application of the Slovak Insurers’ Bureau (SKP). After entering plate number, you can see whether the vehicle is insured and for what period. You can also verify validity by contacting your insurance company’s customer service line.
